The Eagles are preparing as if right tackle Lane Johnson won’t be able to play Thursday night when they take on the Carolina Panthers.
Johnson suffered a concussion during the Eagles’ 34-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Eagles coach Doug Pederson said it happened in the first half, but Johnson wasn’t diagnosed until halftime.
Pederson said Johnson is in the NFL’s concussion protocol, which means he has to go through several steps and get cleared by an independent neurologist before he can be cleared to play.
“It’s tough, based on the protocol, and what the players have to go through,” Pederson said about Johnson being able to get cleared by Thursday. “It’s hard on a short week.”
But the Eagles could also be without their best defensive player for another game in Fletcher Cox, who has missed the last two games with a calf injury.
Pederson said he wasn’t sure if Cox can practice on Tuesday, the main practice day before the game on Thursday. Pederson said he thinks Cox might be able to go through the walkthrough practice Monday afternoon, but that’s a light practice.
The Eagles do have 11 days after the game against the Panthers before they play again, on Oct. 23 against Washington, a Monday night game. So it’s likely that Johnson and Cox will return for that game if they can’t play Thursday
